Black Sheep Brewery Races 2006

The races

During May to July each year, six separate races are organised by towns and villages of North Yorkshire. They are called the "Black Sheep Brewery Races". In 2006, the races will take place on the following dates:

Sun May 14th: Ripon 10M
Sun May 28th: Melmerby 10K
Sat Jun 3rd: Kirkby Malzeard 10K
Sun Jun 25th: Rainton 10K
Sat Jul 1st: Burn Valley Run (half marathon)
Sun Jul 23rd: Burton Leonard 10K
Note: the 2006 dates are the same as those used in 2005 (except they are one year later!).

You will be able to enter one or more of these races by getting an entry form (from the organisers of the race) and sending it off in the usual way. Note: for some of the races you will need to do this: for some races you are not able to enter on the day.

The Ripon Runners web site is a good place to get entry forms for these races. It also usually has the results of each race.

A separate competition

If you are thinking of entering at least five of these races, you may also want to enter a separate competition called the "Black Sheep Brewery Race Series" (BSBRS). Official information about the BSBRS is at www.blacksheepraceseries.co.uk.

Entry into the BSBRS is 10 pounds. The closing date for entry into the BSBRS is "April 14th or when entries reach 220. Please enter early as last year [2005] we closed entries by mid March." Here is a link to the entry form for the BSBRS.

If you enter the BSBRS, you "will receive a Race Pack which includes: Entry forms for the first 3 Races, a Race Series Newsletter, plus a voucher for this year's Race Series memento".

In my opinion, the rules for competing in the BSBRS have become tougher this year. "This year's objective is to complete 5 out of 6 races, 3 x 10k's plus the 10 mile and 1/2 marathon races. Your times for your best 3 10k's plus the 10 mile and 1/2 marathon will be added to give your overall time for the Series."

"Runners who complete the required races will be presented with a personalised plaque which gives their name, total time taken and finishing position within their age group."

Just to repeat what is said above: even if you enter the BSBRS, you also have to enter each race separately and pay the fee for each race. The closing date for entry into each race will be whatever is given on the race's entry form. In previous years, some of the races insisted that you enter by post: they did not permit entries on the day.
