At the start of this year's Blaydon Race, those of us at the front saw him in action: with his hat on as usual, megaphone in one hand and mobile in the other, he was trying to get the Blaydon race off after a delay (probably due to traffic). Later, just before the start, I saw him battling with the runners that were milling around as he moved the tape for the start line into position.

He spoke to me once: I was standing in a queue at Funchal airport about to return from a Christmas holiday in Madeira, and I had a T-shirt on advertising that I had done a race in Funchal. At the time I didn't know him, but he spoke to me telling me who he was and giving me his Blaydon Race business card saying to me he took every opportunity to advertise the Blaydon Race.
